Teaching Spanish with Wordle

What is wordle?

Wordle is a toy for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with your friends. (www.wordle.net). In other words, it is a graphic representation of most commonly used words in a text or any words you wish to display.

How does wordle work?

Here is a video (tutorial) to show how to use Wordle and the different features that it has.

How can Wordle be used to teach Spanish in the classroom?

Wordle can be used to help teach a Spanish vocabulary lesson.  This can be used by any level of Spanish.  The words can be displayed in a wordle to make a more creative way to display the words. In this example, the vocabulary for colors is used. The colors of the words match the color of the font.  Also, the english word matches the color of the spanish translation making it easier to connect the meaning. Students can use this type of Wordle to study their vocabulary.  Matching the colors and the translations will help the students remember the vocabulary.

Wordle can also be used to make a word wall for any type of Spanish vocabulary.  Making large-scale Wordles and posting them up in the classroom as word walls can be a very important tool for students.  Students will be able to look up at the wall and search through words from different categories to choose the ones they want to use.  The words do not need to be translated, but it is important that they are put into categories.  This will help the students who are more advanced find the words they are looking for a lot easier, especially in their writing. An example here is common verbs. This was created by Sarah Doherty on the Wordle site.

Another way wordle can be used to teach Spanish, is with the use of text.  In advanced Spanish classes, students will be reading texts in spanish.  A wordle can be used before reading the text to present important words/ideas that will be in the story.  The students then start the reading with a little bit of background knowledge and and idea of what they are going to read about.  This can help them a lot with their comprehension of the story. An example here is with the poem "Amor" by Juan Ramon Jimenez.
