TEXT IS BEAUTIFUL!
A program that allows you to run learning and programs all through written language. this is something that you would not want to miss. So easy to create, EASY to find, EASY to learn and most of all, EASY TO TEACH!
WHAT IS WORDLE?
" WORDLE is a toy for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with your friends."
Here is what a Wordle is:
ADVANTAGES
Wordle can be used for a numerous amount of applications within a classroom, for lessons especially. My favorite way to use Wordle is for a set or a Warm-Up at the beginning of the class.
Other options how to use it are:
-
Vocabulary
-
frequently used words
-
study guide topics
-
famous speeches
-
colors
-
Class Rules
-
Guessing Game: to see what the words are trying to convey
-
"Tell Me About..." : Allow the students to make their own to tell about something the learned
-
gift/appreciation ideas! : Here you are able to use a screen capture tool to take a screen shot of the Wordle, choose the "Open in in a Window" option and from there you are able to resize and edit the Wordle how you please to make great gifts, picture frame photos, etc. like this:
DISADVANTAGES
Now, unfortunately Wordle does not teach everything, it is not perfect... I know, I know! Too good to be true. So, the downfalls are:
Wordle can not be searched for; it is a "Google App Engine", Therefore, it simply doesn't provide the search and index capability to search for the text in the saved data. Also, it is only capable of working through enabling Java applets to run on your computer. You can see how to here: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/enable_browser.xml
GOOD NEWS is... I these are pretty much the only downfall of Wordle!
A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS!
Next you can see how you can use these as lessons, warm-ups and how I would use these in my own lessons as a social science educator.
