                                                                      Instagram

What is it? Instagram is an online picture sharing application. It can be used on a phone or computer. It uses filters and effects to edit photos taken on your phone. This is used to spread these photos around on social media sites such as Facebook or Twitter.

How do you use it? First if you are using your phone to upload pictures you will need to download the Instagram app from either the App store on an iPhone, the Android Market on a Droid phone, or the Google store on a Google phone. Once it has been successfully downloaded select the App from your phones menu (it should look like the picture at the top of the page). Once this is done you must create an account by selecting the "Sign Up" button. Then enter your email, username and password.

Congratulations! Your are now an Instagram user. Now lets find you some friends. If you already use social media sites like Facebook or Twitter you can find your friends using those sites. Now that you have some people to look at your beautiful pictures select the next button. Now you are given suggested users that you may follow in order to see their posts. If you do not want to follow any of these people just click "done" at the bottom of the page.

Wait one minute. Now that your account is all setup you can begin using Instagram. But, before we go any further lets break down a few terms that this site uses that you may be unfamiliar with.

  • Feed-this is all of the recent posts that your friends and others that you follow have posted.
  • Share-sharing is just as it sounds you are sharing your photos on a multitude of sites. This is optional you can share your pictures strictly on Instagram or post them to other social media sites such as Facebook or Twitter.
  • Filters- Filters are effects that you use to change the look of your picture, such as making it blurry old fashioned or tinted to a certain color.

How to Upload a Picture: Now you know everything about Instagram, except how to upload a picture. First select the button in the bottom right that looks like a camera this is your "share" button.

You can either select the camera feature and take a picture right then that will upload automatically or you can choose from the photo gallery on your phone.

One last thing...now that you have a photo selected you can use your filters to change it. Once you have made your photo all artsy add a description or title to the photo. Once your photo is all blinged out you can select exactly where you want it posted.

You can do Instagram, Twitter, and/or Facebook depending on which of your social media friends you want to see it. Now click done and you have published your first Instagram photo.

Just in case you are a visual learner...Here's a video! (compliments of youtube)

Some Educational Uses for Instagram:

  1. Using Themes from a Book: After reading a book such as Moby Dick we may discuss how the theme of isolation is shown through the vast ocean and the lack of land. As an assignment I would have the students take a picture that they believe captures this theme.
  2. Collage Story: As a teacher I would create a collage of somewhere around twelve pictures and share it with the class. Using these pictures the students would have to create a story that not only uses the images but captures the tone (ex. if they are all tinted blue the tone would be depressing). After make sure that the class understands both the story being told and the tone that was used.
  3. Informational Picture: Have students take a picture of something that interests them. Then have them argue why this is important to them. Make sure they use understand the picture is their claim, the data is their personal experience, and the warrant is why this picture links to their personal life.

10th Grade Standards addressed by these type of Assignments:

Standard 3:  Writing and Composition Prepared graduates master the techniques of effective informational, literary, and persuasive writing.

  • This standard is addressed in both the collage story because they must effectively create a literary text as well as in the Informational Picture
