What is Edmark?
Edmark is a reading program that is carefully sequenced and uses a highly repetitive sight-word recognition method combined with errorless learning. Edmark was the Rainer Reading Program originally, and dates as far back as the 1960’s. Extensive research shows that using this approach helps eliminate incorrect responses. It also really helps the students recognize themselves as readers.

- Vocabulary
- Comprehension
- Fluency
Students who might benefit from Edmark Reading Instruction:
- Preschool Children ages 3-5
- Elementary students who are successful with traditional reading instruction
- English Language Learners
- Most Special Education
- Any student who has not mastered or has failed at phonemic awareness and phonics skills
- Title 1 students
- Non-Readers who struggle with phonics
- Any student that has fallen behind in reading level
What prerequisites might the students need?
- · Pointing: the student must be able to select a correct response by either pointing or responding in some way from a multiple-choice assortment of options.
- · Student must either pronounce back or sign back words on teacher cue.
- · The student must be able to pronounce or respond back the word being taught or reviewed.
- · Receptive Language: sufficient receptive language to follow the cues given by the teacher is necessary.
Are there Teacher Requirements?
No special skills or training are required of the teacher. A teacher, Para professional, other students, or volunteers can teach this program. The person who is given/ monitoring the instruction of this program must be patient, positive, encouraging, and consistent.
EDMARK READING PROGRAM DETAILS
Edmark reading program level 1 teaches 150 words from the Dolch Word list and introduces “s”, “ed”, and “ing” endings. By the end of this program it is designed to take a non-reader to approximately, a 1.0 reading level. Level 2 extends the learning by teaching an additional 200 words, plus compound words and students can achieve a reading level of 2.0 to 3.0. There is a complete software version for both reading levels, which may be used separately or in conjunction with the printed versions. A signing manual is included in level 1 for those who chose to use the program with non-verbal students.
Instruction formats include:
Top to bottom and left to right reading, pairing spoken to written words, matching words and sentences to pictures, and reading simple sentences.

How are students assessed in Edmark?
- Follow the order printed and computer version. Each lesson build on to each other. All the words are reviewed every ten lessons.
- Complete the pre-read lesson first.
- Next, teach the word-recognition lesson. The first 60 lessons teach one word per lesson; the following lessons teach two per day. Keep in mind, program level 1 teaches 150 words, and level 2 teaches more than 200 total words.
- Teach all aspects of each lesson.
- Give the before and after tests to asses learning. RECORD the student’s performance. The tests are included in the program.
