Visualize, explore, collaborate

What is a Dabbleboard?

Dabbleboard is an online collaboration application that is centered around the white board. Dabbleboard allows anyone with a computer and internet access to work together drawing, editing, exploring, visualizing, and communicating. Dabbleboard creates on online environment where multiple users can view and edit the same drawings in real time. The interface of Dabbleboard is easy and intuitive to use, and it has several advanced features which will be discusses in the next section which make it a unique and powerful tool.

What are some features of Dabbleboard?

The first feature which makes Dabbleboard unique is it's intuitive drawing. It is very difficult to draw a perfect circle or square on paper, never mind with a mouse. With Dabbleboard you can start to draw a shape and it will automatically detect which shape you are trying to draw and complete the shape as well as making it look perfect. This works for everything from circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles to diamonds, arrows, and curved or straight lines. Not only does this make presentations look clean, clear, and professional but it also saves time since a diagram can just be sketched instead of having to go back and forth to the toolbar to make.

The second cool feature of Dabbleboard is how it allows people to collaborate simultaneously with each other in real time. Multiple people may log on and all will be able to see and edit the same screen at the same time. Users of Dabbleboard can also edit work asynchronously as well. There is no limit to the number of users who may access and edit a board at the same time. Additionally, Dabbleboard has text, voice, and video chat options so that users can talk and communicate while working together. The variety of options also means that even someone without a webcam or microphone can contribute to the discussion.

The third feature of Dabbleboard which makes it quite useful is that it allows registered users to download their work onto their own computer or to save it online so that others may access and change it. Dabbleboard also "remembers" all of the changes that are made to a board, which means you have unlimited "undoes" if you make a mistake or want to go back to something prior. This even applies if you have saved your work.

A fourth feature is that with Dabbleboard you can save previous drawings and easily use them again with a simple drag-and-drop mechanism. Dabbleboard also makes it easy to insert documents and images into boards that you are working on.

The best feature of Dabbleboard is that it is free to use. While there is a "pro" version that costs money, the free version provides ample functionality for most users.

The above provides some examples of the best and most innovative features of Dabbleboard, but it is such a feature rich application that providing a comprehensive list would be almost impossible. To better understand all that Dabbleboard has to offer, as well as how to use Dabbleboard, please see the below video tutorial.

How can Dabbleboard be utilized in the science classroom?

The uses for Dabbleboard in the science classroom are almost endless. Science is an inherently collaborative subject, where learners often work together in groups to perform labs, solve problems, and organize, interpret, and present data and findings. Dabbleboard can be used for almost any of these activities. For instance, students can use Dabbleboard to create:

Flowcharts

Mind Maps

And any other kind of chart or diagram that you can think of. Dappleboard can even be used to create an electric circuit diagram for a physics class:

If students are doing a project or presentation that requires narrative, such as telling the story of the carbon cycle, or presenting the environmental effects of global warming they could use Dabbleboard to create a comic book:

Dabbleboard's flexibility also makes it an excellent tool for marking up images and photos. In a science context, students may have images of lab results and Dabbleboard can help them present and interpret their data.

By now you should be able to see how Dabbleboard can assist students in collaborating with each other. This can be especially helpful with group assignments and homework projects. Students may work together even if they live far apart or it's difficult for them to find a time and place to all meet together. Dabbleboard can even be used to share information and collaborate with partner classrooms. These classrooms may be across town or across the globe, any place an internet connection is available. For example, students in partner classrooms in different parts of the country may collect data on levels of contamination in the local soil and then collaborate on presenting their results. The possibilities are endless!

Why should I use Dabbleboard in my classroom?

Dabbleboard is an amazing tool which can help learners visualize material and collaborate with each other in an easy and flexible way. It helps learners to be more engaged and creative, can aid in comprehension, and is a great example of how technology can enhance the learning experience. By using Dabbleboard in your classroom you will make learning easier and more exciting for your students, and open up possibilities that traditional tools such as a white board cannot match.
