"Kidspiration" in the Special Education Classroom

By Megan Huckaby

What is "Kidspiration"?

Kidspiration is a computer software program designed to help young students understand concepts in a visual way. It allows for a deeper comprehension level in reading, writing, science, social studies, and math.

The Kidspiration Starter screen has several different options for the user. A student can create his or her own graphic organizer through a web or through writing. There are also many content based activities that can help the student visually understand the subject and create projects for that content area.

How can the Graphic Organizers in "Kidspiration" Help a Student in Special Education?

Graphic Organizers are a tool for allowing students to understand complex topics. In reading, a graphic organizer can help a student understand the plot, characters, main idea and setting of a story. In writing, a graphic organizer can help a student map out his or her topic, introduction, details, and conclusion in starting to create a writing piece. Students that have a specific learning disability can greatly benefit from having a graphic organizer for the following areas:

Phonological Awareness:

Students that have difficulties hearing various sound endings might benefit from creating a graphic organizer like the one above. Students can explore various pictures to find different rhyming words. Having visuals along with written word can greatly benefit a student with a learning disability.

Comprehension:

Students that have a specific reading disability have troubles with comprehension. Graphic organizers on "Kidspiration" can help a student visually understand and map out a concept. During reading, a student can use one of these visual helpers to organize his or her thoughts. A venn diagram can also help a student make comparisons between two concepts.

Writing:

The writing graphic organizers that "Kidspiration" provides help the student organize his or her thoughts before writing. This can be helpful for students that have a specific reading or writing disability. Some of the organizers provide the student with various ways of thinking about a topic and some of the graphic organizers organize the writing in a "who, what, when, where, why" fashion. All of these help a student create more in depth thinking in their writing.

How can the Activities on "Kidspiration" Help a Student in Special Education?

The Math Activities provided in "Kidspiration" help students to problem solve through a visual way. Student can gain knowledge of counting, place value, computation, and geometry

.

Students have a specific math disability can greatly benefit from these math activities. Each math activity section comes with its own manipulative shown on the left of the screen. Students can play around with various math problems in order to visually see how it is laid out. It is important for students that have a math disability to be able to visually see how to work out a math problem. Math is generally very abstract and it is difficult for these students to understand how to work out a math problem.
