What is Social Networking?

Many people believe social networking can be summed up with only one word, “Facebook.” However, social networking is not just one website where people can connect with old friends and make new ones. Social networking is where individuals with usually similar interests group together in some kind of media form to share ideas, discuss topics, up load pictures, and more.

Social sites such as Twitter or Facebook function like an on-line community.  Users can connect with old friends and make new friends at the same time. Users usually associate with other users of similar interest such as occupation, likes and dislikes, sports, entertainment, politics, and other hobbies.

While social networking allows individuals to assemble to gather with others of similar interest it is also a key to linking diverse people together. For example social networking allows someone in the United States connect with someone in Australia.

Social networking is a great tool for the classroom. It is an easy way to increase student engagement. Students who might be too shy to share in the classroom find a voice through social networking. Facebook or Twitter allows students to express their thoughts and feelings through a discussion board. Social networking can improve communication between teacher and student. The student can post a question about homework, the teacher can reply almost instantly. Yes, no more excuses for homework!

Social Networking in History

Social Networking can be use many different ways in the classroom. Social networking is how we communicate today in our society.  What would communication be like if social networking was around when our former presidents were alive? Social networking can be a basic tool used for students, to organize information about a person in history. A Facebook page based on an American president could have dates, pictures, comments, and organizations. Along with these pages by doing research we can make a group of friends for these presidents. Who would presidents be friends with? Who would presidents take pictures with? What organizations would presidents be a part of?

  • Make a Facebook page for a previous president
  • Research important dates for this president, and add to Facebook
  • Communicate with other presidents about important political topics
  • Use twitter to communicate what you are doing at a certain place and time
    • For example: Abraham Lincoln might "tweet" on April 14, 1865," On my way to Ford Theater, with my wife"
  • Use twitter to communicate with other famous people.
    • What would Abraham Lincoln's conversation wit
