Introduction

Prezi is a Web 2.0 presentation tool that can be obtained free in its basic form and used on PCs, Macs, or iPads. User registration is required at Prezi.com. In addition, teachers and students with school-based email addresses can qualify for a free license upgrade that provides additional storage space and privacy options.

What makes Prezi unique is its multi-dimensional motion style, which creates a viewing experience of either moving laterally from one point of information to another or zooming in and out from one depth point to another. Prezi describes this structure as a layout that "shows relations between objects and ideas" by either following a “path” predetermined by the creator or manually "panning" and "zooming" through the presentation. Done right, the resulting look of a Prezi presentation can be highly polished, colorful, and dynamic, making it appropriate for professional settings.

Prezi can be used by teachers for creating presentations and by students for producing projects. In fact, the tool's professional look and ease of use can contribute to students feeling proud of their finished product.

Since Prezi’s interface is essentially an unlimited whiteboard ("canvas") upon which users can posit text, images, and videos, the program can be used for a variety of purposes. For example, Prezi offers a template called “Understand a Topic” which allows a user to create an idea map. Another template, called “Introducing an Idea,” provides a format for teaching concepts.

A Prezi presentation allows the creator to do the following:

  • Use continuous canvas (as opposed to separate slides)
  • Proceed in multiple directions
  • Zoom in or out
  • Employ sweeping motion
  • Edit text, layout, and background
  • Insert images, photos, and videos
  • Insert shapes and frames
  • Insert pre-made drawings
  • Highlight
  • Hyperlink
  • Set the sequence of presentation elements (what comes first, second, third, etc.)
  • Manipulate objects
  • Customize color
  • Select preset themes and backgrounds
  • Hide detail/text until ready to reveal
  • Organize ideas/objects with frames (shown or hidden)
  • Add background music
  • Invite others to collaborate
  • Share on a separate URL or via social networking
  • Print
  • Present in real-time via URL
  • Embed on a blog or website
  • Import PowerPoint or Keynote slides

Possible uses of Prezi in the classroom include:

  • Presentations
  • Lecture aids
  • Graphic organizers
  • Idea maps
  • Note-taking
  • Creating assignments
  • Biographies/Bios
  • Timelines
  • Collaborative projects with other schools/courses
  • Collages/Murals
  • Brainstorming maps

How to Use Prezi

Despite its relatively unique interfacing tools, Prezi is generally user-friendly. In fact, a brief tutorial appears whenever one begins a new “prezi,” enough to get one started using the tool. Beyond the basics, Prezi.com offers a few videos (below), some cheat sheets (below), and a user manual. In addition, the co-founder of Prezi, Adam Somlai-Fischer offers tips on "How to Create a Great Prezi."

2. Next Level

The following tutorial explains how to use frames to organize elements

and how to emphasize or de-emphasize elements by size and zoom.

3. Share Your Prezi

The following tutorial teaches ways to share a finished or in-progress

"prezi," including how to invite collaborators (other editors), present

with and without sequence paths, deliver an online real-time presentation,

or embed a "prezi" on a blog or website.

4. Prezify Your Slides

In the following tutorial learn how to import and arrange PowerPoint

or Keynote slides and how to borrow elements from reusable "prezis"

available online.
