What is Skype?

Skype is a free software that was founded in 2003 in Luxembourg and  has several offices throughout Europe, the U.S. and Asia.  Skype is currently the main Internet communication company in existence.  In addition to free Skype-to-Skype video and voice calls, Skype has features such as calling cell phones, text messaging, instant messaging, voicemail and call forwarding available for computer and mobile phone users.  Used by millions of people, Skype helps connect friends, families, businesses and schools all around the world.

How can Skype be used in the History Classroom?

All subject areas can use Skype.  It is a valuable tool in order to have people talk with students though they may be physically unable to be in the class.  Specifically within the history classroom, it can be used to:

1)   bring in guest speakers.  Authors, museum curators and historical reenactors can all speak with the class regardless of where they are in the world.  Rather than having the teacher always explain history, the students can hear about it from other points of view and from adults who may be more knowledgeable than the teacher in certain areas.

2)   set it up that students can talk to other classrooms in order to compare what they are learning in different parts of the country as well as the world.  For example, students could talk with a classroom of British students to find out what they learn about the American Revolution.

3)   visit places virtually through video chats.  Having someone “show” students around a house that was used on the Underground Railroad will bring that part of history to life much more than reading about it in a book.

As with many new tools, play around with Skype!  It will not break and getting to know the program will help the teacher to use it in more effective ways.
