What is required for a Podcast?

Narration and Story
Voice narration is the heart of the Podcast. Recording and editing a voice track will be the bulk of the Podcast.

What to Consider when Editing

You want the Podcast to flow well.

What does that mean?

-Edit out awkward pauses that are too long. Most Podcasts have little to no extended pauses.
-Don't use words such as "uh", "um", "Like", or other overly-repeated words you say when fumbling over the script.
-Delete, edit, or re-record these sections.

Be creative!

Suggestions:

·         Need a transition? Add music!

  • ·        Some podcasts advertise – Plug a sporting event, club activity, music concert, or fundraiser for your podcast’s advertisement
  • ·      Make your voice sound interesting, engaging, and informed. If you have fun your listeners will enjoy it.
-Change the way you say sentences.
-Slow down certain sentences to add emphasis and importance.
-Smile when you speak into the microphone.
-It makes your words easier to understand
-If you are engaged with the narration your listeners will be as well.

Application to Teaching and Learning

  • Getting Help on Writing Skills

One of the biggest applications of Podcasting in an English classroom is the wide array of helpful podcasts that are available for students. One website in particular is Grammar Girl.1 This website offers several podcasts on different aspects of grammar. If a student is struggling with something in particular in their papers you could assign them to listen to the podcast dedicated to that particular topic. For example if a student is having problems remembering the difference between the word “affect” and the word “effect,” you can direct them to that website where one of the top tips is a podcast on the difference between the two words. From what I saw most of the podcasts are close to five minutes long. Therefore, a student would only have to listen to a short podcast and they would receive more help outside of the classroom.

  • Creating Your Own Podcasts for Class

Another way podcasts can be used is to create your own and have the class listen to it. There are two main ways that this would be done. The first of which is if you have multiple classes or even just one class and you want them to have background knowledge on a certain subject. For example maybe a quick historical background of the novel you will be reading in class. You could design a podcast yourself and upload it to a podcast hosting site.2 Instruct the students to go and listen to it before class that way they have some of the knowledge and you don’t have to go over it you can just jump right in to the novel.

Another way you could utilize uploading your own podcast is to wear a microphone in class every day. These days some of the microphones are fairly sleek and almost imperceptible. However, those could become a bit expensive on a teacher’s salary. But even if you had a bulky microphone it wouldn't be a distraction because the students would know what you were doing. This way you could record everything you say during class. After class you could upload that recording to your computer and trim it for both time and content and then upload it for the class to listen to. It would be impractical to upload the entire 50-90 minute class period depending on how long your class is. Therefore, you would have to edit it using audio editing software.3 This way you could edit it for content as well maybe uploading only some of the key aspects of the lecture. This is also a way to differentiate your lesson if you have a student that struggles with taking notes they could go home and listen to the podcast of the days lecture and catch the main points again.

  • Utilizing Podcasts for Assignments

Finally, podcasts could be utilized for assignments as well. You may want your students to find a podcast on a topic that interests them. One possible place to look would be on the NPR website.4 This website has a lot of information on various topics including; books, technology, news, movies, and music. If a student can’t find something on this website there are several others that they could look for. After the student has found a podcast that they like have them listen to it and write a short paper about what they learned from the podcast. One of the advantages of this assignment is that students can listen to podcasts while doing other activities. This means that they could be doing homework while simultaneously doing something else. Make sure to have them include the URL in their paper so that you could go listen to the podcast as well in order to accurately grade their paper.
