1. Description AND Basic Function of Pollseverywhere.com

Pollseverywhwere.com is a great resource to use in your classroom.  This technology uses cell phones as clickers (a response tool where students type in their answers and it transmits to one source to be collected as data).  Clickers are expensive.  For those of you in STEP this semester, we purchased clickers for $60.  With this program, students use a resource they already have: their cell phones.  What happens if a student doesn’t have access to a cell phone to use in class?  Have them write on a dry erase board.  Take a blank sheet of paper, place it in a sheet protector, and you have a dry erase board.

After signing up for free, you can create various multiple choice and short answer polls for your students to respond to.  Other functions of this resource are that you can download a poll as a Power-point and insert it into a lecture, download the data, and clear the results of a poll to be used for multiple class periods.  This resource enables you to quickly see your students’ progress in responding to the polls.  One of the main reasons we love this resource is because it takes the fight out of cell-phone usage in the class room.  Students no longer have to hide their phones because it’s okay to use them!

3. Applications for Polls Everywhere

In the description and tutorial above, we gave an example of using Polls Everywhere to create a multiple-choice question where students balance equations and text in their answer.  This can be used as a check-point question to see where your students are.

http://www.quia.com/rr/70837.html gives good ideas for activities that can be completed with clickers.  For example: This one is a “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” type game.  Teachers can use a screen like this:

to collect generic answers to each question.  To play the game as a class, teachers will collect whole-class answers, and the most popular answer is selected within the game.  The generic screen can then be cleared by selecting “Clear Results” and re-used for the next question.

Polls Everywhere can also be used for attendance by having each student send in his or her name in an open-ended short response question: “Type in your name.”  Note that text signatures do not affect whether or not an answer is transmitted to the site.

http://funbasedlearning.com/chemistry/chemBalancer/ques3.htm gives many equations to balance.  The coefficients to these equations can be placed in answers to the question for the students to answer.

http://sciencespot.net/Pages/classchem.html#Anchor8 gives various lesson plans and activities that can easily be adapted for use with clickers.

http://www.nclark.net/ChemicalReactions gives various worksheets with many chemical equations to be balanced.

In http://ims.ode.state.oh.us/ODE/IMS/Lessons/Web_Content/CSC_LP_S03_BB_L09_I06_01.pdf, the pre-assessment assignment can be adapted for use with clickers.
