Wordle sounds like a silly word so what exactly is it?

"Wordle is a toy for generating "word clouds" from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes," according to Wordle.net.

How to use Wordle:

Visit the Wordle website (http://www.wordle.net/). From here you can click "Create" to start your own Wordle cloud. You also have the option to view other clouds created by clicking on "Gallery" on the upper part of the page.

After clicking "Create", you will be directed to a text box. In here you will put down all of the words/phrases that you want to be in your Wordle cloud. Keep in mind that the more times a word/phrase appears in the box, the more prominent it will appear in the generated cloud. In this cloud, the words "Residence" and "Halls" are repeated multiple times. After you have included all the words/phrases you want, click on "Go" to generate your cloud. (*Note: Wordle counts by words, not lines. Even though "Residence Halls" is on one line, they will be counted as separate words in the Wordle cloud).

After clicking "Go", you Wordle cloud will be created with all the information that was placed in the text box on the previous page. Again, words and phrases that are brought up multiple times will appear larger and more prominent than the others. As you can see, "Residence Halls" is larger than any other word because it was copied into the box multiple times.

Once the Wordle has been generated, it can be randomized into different styles by clicking the "Randomize" button on the bottom of the page. The Wordle can also be changed manually by using the highlighted toolbar. Everything from font to color can be changed.

Wordles can also be created by using by inputting websites that feature Atom or RSS feeds.

By using web pages with these feeds on Wordle, the Wordle will update information when the web page does. Look for the symbols on the picture to see if a page has a feed.

Applying Wordle in the classroom for Biology lessons

-During a lesson about ecosystems, students form into groups and are given a different ecosystem. They then have to create a Wordle using words that would fit into that ecosystem (people, animals, food, plants, etc.). After each Wordle is completed, groups can share their work and learn about the different ecosystems.

-Use Wordle as a method for quizzes. Gather words from a text and students have to determine the answers by using the Wordle. You can also take the most important words (larger words) to form your quiz.

-Create a Wordle at the beginning of the year full of biology vocabulary that you will use in your lessons or on quizzes/tests. Blow it up onto a poster board and hang it up in your classroom. Seeing this everyday will help your students learn and study the vocabulary. Seen below are different examples of Wordles for each grade level.
