SMARTboards in Social Studies

SMARTboard Overview

SMARTboards are interactive classroom tools that project images from the computer onto a screen that is visible for the whole class. This interactive whiteboard provides multiple ways to demonstrate different concepts and model lessons.  SMARTboards use Microsoft Windows programming and digital touch technology to project the images from the computer onto the interactive whiteboard. SMARTboards come with digital pens that allow the teachers and students to write information onto the projection screen as well. The pens are very versatile; you can change the “ink” color or their function from pen to highlighter. There is also a digital eraser that can be used with the boards. These tools take SMARTboards from ordinary whiteboards/projectors to a great interactive tool that allows many methods to be shown to the students.

The first SMARTboard was created over 20 years ago by SMART Technologies. SMART products are being used in over 600,000 classrooms in the United States and in more than 100 countries! SMART Technologies values education and has been recognized for award-winning products that have enabled "incredible" moments of learning in the classroom. SMARTboard is very versatile, you can use the software that comes with it, buy additional software, or simply open an interactive webpage.  There are many websites that provide interactive lesson plans and activities, some of which are listed below.

As a result of their adaptable nature, SMARTboards are compatible with all different learning styles. SMARTboards are great tools that can be used for every content area. In Social Studies they are particularly useful for displaying images of artifacts, maps, timelines, etc. There are websites such as www.smarttech.com that provide downloadable lesson plans, manipulatives and other interactive tools for use with SMARTboards. Many of the lessons available have been developed by other K-12 teachers.  These collaborative lesson plans help provide variety in teaching methods for the content as well as new ways to incorporate the SMARTboard.

Example Lessons and Annotated Links:
