What is a Smartphone- a Smartphone is a device that lets you make telephone calls, but also adds in features that you might find on a personal digital assistant or a computer--such as the ability to send and receive e-mail and edit Office documents. Smartphone’s also have QWERTY keyboard on each of them allowing users to text, or send messages with having access to all letters on the key board.

What is an iPad- an iPad is a tablet computer made by Apple Inc., it is in a category between a smartphone and a laptop computer. The iPad comes in two different models: the first model is Wi-Fi and the second is Wi-Fi + 3G, and with both of these models there are three different options for storage capacity. The iPad can be used for email, internet access, photos, videos, music, iBooks, maps, notes, calendar, and accessing PDF documents, PowerPoint documents, other documents, and many other applications. The iPad has a touch screen with a keyboard that makes typing easy by tracking what is typed and correcting spelling and insert punctuation when needed.

Lesson Ideas

1. Current Events- One application that is available for the iPad is the Wall Street Journal application. This application would give students the opportunity to stay caught up in the news globally. One important aspect of social studies is knowing what is happening in the world around you and this would give students an easy way of keeping current with the news.

2. Maps- Using Google services a student could use the map application on the iPad to do many different types of activities. The iPad can find your location using Wi-Fi hotspots or GPS and cell towers. Students would be able to map out routes on the iPad as well as look at different maps. The maps are able to be seen from above with satelites or from a street view.

3. Notes- Students would be able to easily type notes into their iPads. Students would be able to take notes during a class discussion or take notes for other activities inside or outside of school. The iPad would give students the ability to write down any notes they may have on a field trip or during an exercise that may not be in their classroom. Students would not have to worry about getting the correct folder and plenty of writing utensils when switching classrooms for certain subjects, with the iPad students would have all their folders in one small location and would not need writing utensils.

Teacher Uses

Teachers will be able to use the iPad as a way to keep in contact with there students through email or through a school used website such as blackboard. With the Wi-Fi + 3G version of the iPad teachers will be able to check emails in any location they would have cell phone service and have the ability to reply to a students email anywhere in an easy fashion with the touch keyboard available. Teachers will also be able to update their gradebooks on the iPad. Making a spreadsheet on an iPad is easy to do making it easy to make a gradebook directly on their iPad, as well as having access to any online gradebooks that may be used by the school.
