Civil Rights and Strip Designer

(Note the next section is how we might present the content and design tool to students, but this design tool can be used to cover a wide range of subjects both within the Social Sciences area and other contents).

The civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s was filled by normal human beings performing superhuman acts in an attempt to rid the United States of racism.  What better treatment for these brave individuals than to immortalize them in the way superheroes are, in a comic book you will create.  By using Strip Designer on the iPad you will create at least a 10 page comic book on an important aspect of the civil rights movement.  You may chose to chronicle and important figure of the movement such as Martin Luther King Jr., Malcom X or Rosa Parks or an facet of the movement like Freedom Riders, sit-in demonstrations or landmark court decisions such as Plessy v. Ferguson.

Social Science Ideas

Strip designer can be used in various areas of Social Science. In our above example we used the concept of the important figures in the Civil rights movement. Another example of how Strip Designer can be used in Social Sciences is any historical event but allow the students to pick a particular perspective. For the Civil War, some students could choose the Union or the Confederates. Comparing the two comics would be very interesting and would cover a broad range of material in a relatively short time.

From a geographical standpoint the Strip Designer would be an excellent choice when describing the characteristics of a country. My students would give a few key points on the characteristic of the country by creating a comic about their travels to that country.

For economics a great idea with Strip Designer could be showing the equations and concepts of economics in a way in which they would be able to explain the content or equations in student's own words. Students could create a comic that is simply a teacher explaining the content to the students or a more creative approach.

Strip designer allows students to use their creativity to master the content.
