Description of Product:

The Mixbook is a great tool that can bring any students’ work to life. The students are able to combine images and text to present the knowledge they have obtained from the curriculum that was taught. The Mixbook can be interdisciplinary because the students have the opportunity to explore graphic design and share their writing within a historic content area through a storybook, poem, etc. Some examples of this are a photo book, card, or family tree: which can be used for history as a timeline, biography, or to explore different cultures around the world. It is easy to use and it leads the students through the design process with step-by-step instructions.

Student and Teaching Applications:

1. Elementary School Example

Students studying historical timelines could use this tool to create a timeline of their life up to the present.  Each opening of the scrapbook could represent a year of their life. Each page would include pictures, labels, and any other information the student wants to include.

2. Middle School Example

Students studying ancestry could research their ancestors and create a family tree using Mixbook.  Students could include names and pictures of family members on each page.  If pictures are unavailable, students could scan in drawings that they have created based on what they found in their research.  The scrapbook could be structured so that the beginning of the book displays the eldest ancestors and progresses to the students by the end of the scrapbook.

3. High School Example

Students studying the Civil War could create a yearbook of all the major historical figures involved in the war.  Students would use pictures of the figures accompanied with descriptions of their contributions to the war and anything else they feel appropriate.  Students could assign roles to some of the historical figures (example: Best Leadership Skills, Biggest Impact, Most Likely to Become President).

4. Other ideas

          a. Students create their own historical fiction picture book/story

          b. Students create a biography of a significant historical figure using text and pictures

          c. Students create an account of the transformation from Pangaea to our current world map using figures, text and pictures

          d. Students create a Mixbook for different styles and genres of music throughout history
