Quizlet is an online software program where students and teachers choose what they want to learn.  Users can easily make flashcards, play interactive games that allow students to compete with each other and review information and facts.

  Features

Some of the features in Quizlet are the flashcards and games, such as, Scatter and Space Race.  There are countless pre-made flashcards, and teachers and students are also able to make up their own.  Here is an example of flashcards we made up on our own.

When making flashcards, the creator can put all the information on one side of the card or choose to put the word on the front of a card with the definition on the opposite side. If words are put on both sides of the flashcards, clicking on the card will reveal the text on the other side.

Quizlet also allows you do teach to different learners by using your created flashcards. In this case we added pictures to our flashcards to add a visual aspect for learners. The audio button at the top left corner of the flashcard also allows sound to be added to your flashcard set. When the audio button is on, a voice will read the words on the cards for you.

In Speller, the participant sees a screen that looks like the example above. They are given a picture and a word from the flashcard set made. Along with the word and picture, an audio plays the word the activity wants the participant to type. In this case, the audio would play cafe and the participant would be expected to type cafe in the box outlined in blue. If the audio needs to be repeated the replay audio button can be clicked to hear the word. In this activity the contestant can be shown the word in English and type in the correct Spanish word, or they can be given the word in Spanish and type in the correct English word in the box.

In the Learn activity, participants are given a word from the flashcards and are expected to type in the correct answer in the box below. In this case, the participant sees the word blue and the picture that corresponds with the word. To get the correct answer, the participant would type azul in the box. The participant can also be prompted with the Spanish word in which case they would be expected to type the correct word in English. A new feature of this activity is the speak it option. If the speak it option is clicked, the participant would hear the word instead of seeing it on the screen. As with the visual version, it they are prompted with English, they would be expected to type the correct Spanish word and if they were prompted with Spanish, they would be expected to type the correct English word.

In Scatter, Quizlet takes the information from your flashcards to create a game. If you add pictures to your flashcards they will also appear on the screen for scatter. During this game the contestant must drag the topic word to the correct meaning as quickly as they can. For example, using the color flashcards shown above, the contestant would click rojo and drag it to the red picture and word. They would continue doing this until all the words are matched.

In Space Race, Quizlet will scroll words across the screen.  The student must type in the corresponding term and press enter.   The student must type in the correct answer before the words scrolls past the screen.  For example, if the color pink scrolls across the screen, the user must type in "Rosa" before it disappears.

Quizlet also provides a test option for flashcard sets. The person giving the test has many options for creating the test. They can pick between written questions, matching questions, multiple choice questions, true/false questions, or a combination of the different forms. The creator of the test can also choose the number of questions in the test. The number of possible questions will correspond with the number of flashcards made. As with the other activities Quizlet offers, the test participant can be prompted in Spanish or in English. In the example above, the participant is being prompted in English with one written question and one multiple choice question.

 in the Classroom

Quizlet can easily be used in a classroom setting for independent review of certain facts. For example, if the class is learning about the names of animals in Mandarin Chinese, the teacher can walk through with the students and create a set of flashcards with the Chinese name on one side and the English name on the other. Then the students can play the games (Scatter or Space Race) and try to beat each other's scores.  It promotes friendly competition and benefits struggling students as well as exceptional ones.

Students can also help to coach each other (while learning the information themselves!) by creating flashcards for each other. You might have students divide into small groups or even partnerships. Quizlet offers a convenient platform for students to exhibit and exercise their knowledge of various subjects, while sharing it with others.
