PowerPoint is a presentation tool made by Microsoft and is used in many different subjects.  This particular PowerPoint can be used by students who want to run their own IEP (Individualized Education Program) meeting.  It is an easy and effective way for students to be organized when they go into the meeting and allows the IEP team to use the student as a valuable team member.

How To Use

Under the Student Only Template takes you to the PowerPoint for students.  From there it gives step by step instruction on each slide.  Gray slides are the direction slides and the white slides are for the students to adjust to what they need personally.  The students will be able to adjust it to how they need it.

There is also a Teacher Template on the list that teacher can use to prepare the students for the slides by giving them worksheet that come with the teacher PowerPoint.  If you follow the link and then click on the square that is labeled "Click Here To Download" you will be able to choose which one you would like to use.

Why Use This in Special Education?

PowerPoint is used in most every subject.  But this certain PowerPoint is perfect to use in the special education classroom because they are able to self advocate and become more involved in their own IEP.

  •  It allows the team to see where the student sees themselves
  • The team can see what struggles and strengths the students have
  • It gives the students the opportunity to start planning their own future

Another PowerPoint that you can use to introduce the IEP process to the students before have them jump right into it so that they are able to get some background on the actual meeting it self and other key components.

Why Get Students Involved

It is important to make sure that the students are involved in their IEP, and it is the teachers responsibility to make sure that they get the student involved.  Here is a PowerPoint for teachers that they can use during faculty meetings.

Helping students go through this process is very important and using the PowerPoint not only makes it easier for the students, but also on the teachers and it builds confidence in the students.  This article gives some background in the process of helping students.

When you take the time to teach the students how to become involved in their IEP.  Give the students a resource for before and after the IEP meeting so that you can see what you have to help them improve and what they learned.  This rubric can be used for the students.

PowerPoint and The Special Education Class

The PowerPoint is an awesome and easy tool to use in the classroom and in every single subject.  It can be used as an effective tool for the special education classroom so that students can learn to self-advocate for themselves.  They will be able to use it for their whole lives and the PowerPoint gives them the opportunity to become comfortable with their disability and discussing it with an IEP team and others around them.
