Helping kids to learn different types of money and what they add up to:

What it does:

This app has a $50, $20, $10, $5 and $1 bill shown via image on the right.  Next to that is shown a quarter, dime, nickel and penny.  On the left shows a dollar amount.  The students have to create that dollar amount by clicking on the correct money to get to that amount.

Where you can find it:

I found this app on the Microsoft Surface app store.

How it can be used in the classroom:

This app can be used in 2nd grade and up to teach kids about money and what amounts total to what.  The farther you progress in the amounts, the higher up they become, so then it might be more geared toward 4th and up.

Difficulties:

The complaints I have are:  you can't select a grade so the amounts are relevant to that grade level; as the amounts get higher they don't add larger bills -- like a $100 bill for amounts that are in the $500's, you have to just keep clicking $50 or $20.  The biggest problem with Surface apps is the store is different than android and iPad and the Surface is so new, there just aren't that many yet.
