Tutorial Information for Self-Directed Learning

Through WebQuest, students can participate in an inquiry-based project online. Through a website, students are directed to multiple links to gather information, completing some type of assignment. All the information used for their assignment will come from the internet. There are various programs available to create a WebQuest, but each WebQuest program will include the same format to guide students through the process.

Thirteen ed online explains the function of WebQuests on their informational website, “Concept to Classroom.”  WebQuest is widely available and there are many existing WebQuests at your disposal from all over the world.  This is a student-centered, classroom based lesson in which students explore and evaluate what can come from the internet. In addition, it can be used as a short assignment in one class session, or even as long as a one-month unit. It can involve group work, enabling collaboration. The assignment is built around sources that the teacher selects and students use the information rather than finding it themselves.

In order to start their online discovery process, students will begin on an introduction page, which will place them in some type of role related to the assignment. In addition, students will be presented with a problem or conflict to be solved. Next, the task page will give a condensed version of what they will be doing or producing (the objectives). After reviewing their task, students will then review the process page. Here, students will find step-by-step directions and websites to complete their assignment. Next, student can review a rubric to make sure their work is complete. And last, there is a conclusion page leaving the students with further curiosity on the subject, perhaps prompting the students to continue their online discoveries on their own.

WebQuest Page Application to Teaching and Learning

  1. As a teacher, a WebQuest page can be designed as an interactive way to conduct an assignment that is technology based. For a foreign language class the teacher can create a web based assignment in the target language that requires the student to research and post their findings.
  2. Teachers can post material such as links that may be of supplemental use for the students to complete their web based assignment. This will allow students to properly use already provided research material in order to complete their assigned task. It also allows the teacher to grade on the information application on behalf of the student rather than on the information gathering.
  3. A rubric can be uploaded by the teacher in order for students to see what the teacher is looking for in their completed assignments and what they will be graded on.
  4. This is a great tool to conclude a unit. It allows the student to put into practice what they have learned in a creative way.
  5. This tool also allows students to further develop team work abilities like collaboration and accountability. This helps keep students focuse while working with online material.

Technical Web Links: links that will assist in future use of the tool for teaching.
