Changing Communication Through Social Media

For this class, students will all create their own twitter account on the first day of class. Students will follow the teacher, and all of the other students in the class on twitter. This will allow for the class to discover newer forms of communication.

Twitter is a social media tool used by nearly everyone in today's world. It allows friends to connect with friends, celebrities to connect with everyday people, and everyday people to get an insight into the lives of their favorite celebrities. Social media, especially Twitter, is revolutionizing the way the world sees communication. For a speech and communication class, it is a great tool to examine.

HOW TO USE TWITTER

The above link runs you through the steps to form a Twitter account.

Once an account is created for all the students, the teaching can begin.

TWITTER IN LECTURE

For technology aware teachers, twitter can be used in a lecture to attract students' attention. For example, teachers can tweet a question and require student response. Teachers may also use tweets people have posted as a way to teach her lesson on communication.

TEACHING THE CHANGING WORLD OF COMMUNICATION

Twitter and other forms of social media have completely changed how our world communicates. It is important to teach students this lesson. 25 years ago house phones were the most hi-tech way to communicate. Slowly cell phones and text messages were introduced, and people could frequently talk on a larger basis. With the recent boom of social media, however, people can realistically talk to anyone else in the world. Average, everyday people can communicate with the most well-known names in the world now. Teachers can use Twitter as a tool to reveal the increasing access to world communication.

HOW TO COMMUNICATE EFFICIENTLY WITHOUT TECHNOLOGY

While communication is becoming more accessible everyday, speech and communication teachers must propose methods for students to still be able to communicate with people one-on-one. They should outline the problems created by social media or text messaging as their only means of communication. While they are good means to access information worldwide, they cannot replace interpersonal interactions. Twitter can therefore be used by the teacher to reveal ways communication is more important than hashtags or trends.

PROJECT BASED ON THE USE OF TWITTER

Teachers can easily come up with great project ideas for their students using Twitter. Teachers can have students use Twitter to create project. Maybe compile tweets and reveal their communication problems, or also demonstrate how Twitter reveals the greater ability to obtain information on a global scale. The ideas are endless, but Twitter could be a great way for teachers to assign students high-tech projects.
