Language Arts: “Book Creator”

By: Tori Zivojinovic

How does “Book Creator” work? This is an iPad app that allows you to create an original book with text, pictures, and sound. On Book Creator you can make children’s books, photo books, cook books, etc. This application makes ‘fixed layout’ e-books, which means that the creator can position and move the text and images on the page. This application is very suitable for children ages five and up. The books you create on an iPad can also be opened up on any e-readers (Kindle and Tablet). Another cool thing is that you can sell your created books on the Apple website! This app is dedicated to making original books that people create.

Application to Teaching and Learning:

1. In 2nd or 3rd Grade “Book Creator” could be used for the students to make their own poem book. During class they will be able to learn and read many different poems; through brainstorming and editing they will be able to write their own poems and then add their finished poems to Book Creator.

Standard: 2. Design and Develop Digital Age Learning Experiences and Assessments: Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessment incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS·S.

2. “Book Creator” could be used for a research project as well. Students in your classroom could pick a person to study and research in history and then make a book about that specific person. This lesson could be taught in 2nd grade all the way up to 12th grade.

Standards: 3. Model Digital Age Work and Learning Teachers: exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society.

3. By using “Book Creator” students are able to learn how to import images, write text, and import sound into a digital book. For example, have student import pictures and make a picture book and have the student narrate the story using voice-over sound to be imported into the book.

Standard: Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-faceand virtual environments.
