What is a Smartboard?
An Interactive White Board is a broad name for a device that, when used with a computer and some type of large video display, makes the surface of the display become touch sensitive in some manner and allows it to be used to control the computer. It enables teachers and business leaders to combine a variety of learning tools, such as websites, images and videos, into a compelling lesson.
Functions-
Available as a white board or as a display frame that fits over a plasma screen, is a touch-screen device that allows the operator to manipulate content with the tap of a finger.
Features-
The Smart Board has an electronic pencil and eraser that allows users to mark up the screen, making it ideal for classroom brainstorming, PowerPoint presentations, games and Web browsing. The device also has click and drag capability, the ability to convert written text into type and animated dice ideal for games.
:Advantages in the Classroom:
SMART Boards increase the interactive atmosphere in the classroom which in return increases the learning experience. Teachers can project their notes and slide shows on these boards instead of becoming a one sided lecture, it becomes a two-sided experience. Students can edit and make notes on the screen or answer questions directly on the screen. This allows the students to play a larger part in the discussion while absorbing more from the lesson. SMART Boards could someday replace textbooks in the classroom. Since textsbooks have to be replaced with new editions, SMART Boards can be used continually with updated information. Some students have learning disabilities that hold them back from performing the same tasks as average students, these students can benefit from the interactive whiteboard.
Other advantages include:
- Students who need repetition
- Students who are absent from school
- Struggling learners
- Review for tests
- Colorful and dynamic- keeping children engaged
:Ways to use the Smartboard in the classroom with art/music:
Teachers and students can compose music together and hear their results. Student art can be created, displayed and manipulated on the SMART Board interactive whiteboard.
Students can also:
- Analyze works of art
- Compare techniques
- Demonstrate drawing techniques
- Explore famous artists
- Create art as a group
- Examine sculpture and masks
Lesson Activities-
Here are two lesson activities that introduce music and color concepts to K-3 students.
Solfeggio
This activity aims to introduce do, re, and mi on the the staff. Students practice identifying and composing using given formats.
Learning Colors
In this activity, children learn the color names. A location game identifying specific colors reinforces their knowledge. This activity is crosscurricular with math, as colors are grouped in different shapes.
